In New York City, that proved to be a catastrophe for one store clerk.

Former President Donald Trump took a break from his criminal case in Manhattan to visit the bodega – a small convenience store – where clerk Jose Alba was charged with murder defending himself from a robber in 2022.

He met with the store’s co-owner, Maad Ahmed, and employees, where he vowed to “straighten New York out.”

“You should be allowed to have a gun,” Trump said. “If you had a gun, you’d never get robbed, you’d never get robbed, that would be the end of it.”

New York City has some of the most restrictive gun control laws in the country, even though the state was smacked down in the Supreme Court’s New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc. v. Bruen decision.

It’s illegal to have a loaded firearm in a place of business in the state, and residents have to deal with a mountain of red tape to get a concealed carry permit in the city.

Criminals know that virtually everyone they target in the city is unarmed.

Ahmed explained to Trump that his store in Manhattan’s Washington Heights neighborhood was still dealing with crime after the high-profile Alba incident.

“What do you do? Isn’t it crazy?” Trump asked. Is it almost a way of doing business, you getting robbed?”

The convenience store owner said robbers “would respect the store” if they knew he had a gun and told the former President he would try to get one.

Attorney Rich Cardinale – who represented Alba – lamented that even if employees of the store were armed it still wouldn’t be enough.

“If you use a gun and you’re defending yourself lawfully, you will go to jail,” Cardinale explained.

Ahmed told the New York Post that he never voted before because of how busy he was running his convenience store, but now he will be backing Trump.

“What happened to Jose was very hard for me. Jose was defending himself from the guy who came behind the counter. All for $1 worth of chips,” Ahmed said.

The 61-year-old Alba had an attacker lunge over the store’s counter in July 2022.

Alba used a knife in self-defense, which resulted in the death of the robber, 35-year-old Austin Simon.

It should have been an open and shut case of self-defense, but Soros-backed Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg charged him with murder.

Bragg dropped the hammer on a store clerk acting in self-defense while he was giving a slap on the wrist to violent career criminals.

After the case generated national headlines and massive public outcry, he dropped the charges against Alba but claimed that Alba was still in the wrong.

Bragg said the “defendant was not justified in his use of deadly physical force.”

New York City residents are being prevented from exercising their constitutional right to self-defense from the state’s war against the right to keep and bear arms.
