Hollywood celebrities are well known for their elitist, entitled behavior.
That attitude doesn’t fly in America’s National Parks.
And 007 star Pierce Brosnan was punished for pulling this absurd stunt at Yellowstone.
Yellowstone was the first national park in the country and is one of the country’s national treasures.
Attendance has been on the rise since the pandemic, and with that, visitors’ bad behavior has increased.
The park has had to reprimand visitors from approaching animals and wandering off-trail.
Yellowstone is world-renowned for its breathtaking geysers and hot springs.
Visitors are known to enter restricted areas around them to try and get a picture.
A famous actor found out that breaking the park’s rules can be costly.
Pierce Brosnan charged for a photo next to a hot spring
Famed actor Pierce Brosnan – who starred as James Bond in four of the franchise’s films – was fined $1,500 for breaking the rules at Yellowstone.
The former 007 was charged in federal court for entering a restricted area and hiking off-path.
“Brosnan, 70, walked in an off-limits area at Mammoth Terraces, in the northern part of Yellowstone near the Wyoming-Montana line, on Nov. 1, according to citations issued by the park. He was in the park on a personal visit and not for film work, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Wyoming has said,” The Associated Press reported.
He posted a picture on social media of him standing next to what appeared to be a thermal feature at Mammoth Hot Springs in the snow while making the peace sign.
Yellowstone has strict rules to protect visitors from getting too close to thermal features for their own safety.
More than 20 people have died in the park’s thermal features over the years.
According to the park’s website, Yellowstone has five thermal features: hot springs, geysers, mud pots, travertine terraces, and fumaroles.
The Mammoth Terraces region of the park is rich with thermal features.
Brosnan was charged after the National Park Service was alerted to the pictures on his social media account.
Brosnan pays fines and apologizes for his stunt
Federal prosecutors pushed for a $5,000 fine for Brosnan – who has an estimated net worth of $200 million – and two years probation.
The actor agreed to plead guilty in exchange for having one of the charges dropped against him.
He was issued a $500 fine and was required to donate $1,000 to Yellowstone Forever Geological Fund for community service.
“The ground in thermal areas is fragile and thin, and scalding water is just below the surface,” a Justice Department press release said.
“Trespassing on thermal features is dangerous and can harm delicate natural resources within the park.”
Brosnan apologized on social media and claimed signs in the park were covered by snow.
“As an environmentalist, I have the utmost respect for and love of our natural world,” Brosnan wrote.
“However, I made an impulsive mistake – one that I do not take lightly – when entering a thermal area covered in snow in Yellowstone National Park to take a photograph. I did not see a “No Trespassing” sign posted that warned of danger, nor did I hike in the immediate area. I deeply regret my transgression and offer my heartfelt apologies to all for trespassing in this sensitive area.”
Pierce Brosnan learned that Yellowstone’s rules still apply to him even though he’s a celebrity.
