It’s an election year so Democrats are going for broke with the far-left wish list.
Now they’re trying an end-run around Congress with a dirty trick.
And a public health official proposed one emergency to shred the Constitution that would make Fauci proud.
Biden’s Surgeon General declares that gun violence is a public health emergency
U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy delivered on a long-held goal of gun grabbers by declaring gun violence a public health crisis. He used his position as a public health official to push a gun control agenda. Murthy issued an advisory that laid out his solutions to gun violence which just so happened to be at the top of the wish list for gun grabbers. He wants an assault weapons ban, universal background checks, safe storage laws, a ban on high-capacity magazines, red flag confiscation laws, and a host of other unconstitutional restrictions on law-abiding gun owners.
“We don’t have to continue down this path, and we don’t have to subject our children to the ongoing horror of firearm violence in America. All Americans deserve to live their lives free from firearm violence, as well as from the fear and devastation that it brings. It will take the collective commitment of our nation to turn the tide on firearm violence,” Murthy said.
Murthy used a false narrative to gin up support for his proposals by claiming that guns are the leading cause of death for kids. The age range used in this claim gives away the game. The definition of a kid is ages 1-19. And the vast majority of deaths are in the 18-19 age range. Pull those two ages out and guns aren’t anywhere close to being the leading cause of death for kids. This is a play on emotion by invoking kids to build support for gun control.
The anti-gunners want to turn guns into the new tobacco
Murthy has said in the past that he sees the way the public health bureaucracy treated tobacco, especially cigarette smoking, as a model of success that could be applied to guns. Tobacco use declined when it began to become socially stigmatized. The Surgeon General doesn’t have the power to ban guns yet. But his plan is to stigmatize them from an allegedly scientific perspective to try to drive down support for them in society and lay the groundwork for future gun control.
“We saved so many lives, and that’s what we can do here, too,” Murthy claimed without mentioning all the lives saved in defensive gun uses by lawfully-armed Americans – lives that, many of which, would have been lost were it not for individuals exercising their Second Amendment freedoms.
Nevertheless, some ten medical groups came out in support of Murthy’s proposal to build the appeal to authority for the gun control argument. The American Medical Association, American Academy of Pediatrics, American College of Surgeons, American Public Health Association, and the YWCA all released statements supporting the decision.
New Mexico’s Democrat Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham declared gun violence a public health emergency in Albuquerque and the surrounding country last year. She suspended open and concealed carry for law-abiding gun owners. And she admitted that her order wouldn’t affect criminals. Eventually, she was smacked down in federal court and walked back her efforts. Grisham praised the Surgeon General’s decision to follow in her footsteps.
Others recognized the move as exactly what it is – the Biden administration trying to implement backdoor gun control under the guise of a supposed public health crisis cooked up with misleading stats made worse by gun-grabbing politicians’ own soft-on-crime policies.
“This is an extension of the Biden administration’s war on law-abiding gun owners. America has a crime problem caused by criminals. The reluctance to prosecute and punish criminals on the part of President Biden and many of his allies is the primary cause of that. That’s a simple fact,” NRA Executive Director Randy Kozuch said in a statement on X.
The pandemic exposed the ways authoritarian politicians and public health officials will abuse emergency powers. Murthy’s gun violence order is another important reminder that Congress and State Legislatures must curb emergency powers.
